What made you think this was a good idea in the first place?

Think what was a good idea?

Visiting churches. In London. You're not getting God, are you?

No, no.

Because quite a lot of people do at our age, you know. They turn fifty, and they feel that their lives are...

Coming to an end?

I was going to say losing direction. Things, you know, things don't turn out the way you expect.

Too bloody right they don't.

So people can feel... frustrated and unfulfilled. Next thing you know, they've got God. There's nothing wrong with it. I'm not decrying it.

Well, I haven't got him. But turning fifty definitely had something to do with it.

Did it? In what way?

Well, you know, you see all these churches out of the train window, and you think to yourself, that looks like an interesting place... I must go and have a look at it one day.

I feel that way when I look in an atlas. Not when I see a church.

Perhaps the churches bit is just me. But then, when you get to fifty, you think to yourself, if I'm ever going to look at those churches, I'd better get on with it. So here I am.
